"Checkerboard Flash Gordon" 20 1/2" wide x 21 1/4" high. Hand dyed cottons by Judy Robertson with commercial cottons. Machine Quilted, polyester batting. When I was a child (we're talking the late 1940s here) my brother and I and a few neighborhood kids would be dropped of at the local small town movie theater on Saturday afternoons to watch the Saturday matinees. One of my sharp memories was seeing the move "Flash Gordon" - especially a scene in which a handsome, blond Flash was standing on the outside of his space ship (with no breathing apparatus!) in a broad daylight cosmic environment. This little checkerboard quilt embodies that memory of a fictional space scene where the sun lit everything up and people could breathe outside their space vehicles. This quilt was made in 2012 for a solo exhibition of small checkerboard quilts at my alma mater, Ohio Wesleyan University.
